WAXON Studio is owned and operated by Jessica Kaufman, Asheville resident since 2004.
I learned batik, tie-dye, and shibori while working at Gwynn Valley Camp, and I came back year after year to continue my studies in the crafts programs there. Eventually I was hired to head up the crafts department (as it were), and was so inspired by what I was doing, that in 2008 began working towards my Masters degree in Crafts Education at Prescott College in Arizona. I learned so much about how we learn as makers, what crafting does to our brains and to our self-esteem, and about the handmade movement specifically in Southern Appalachia in the last century. All of this, plus my undergrad degree in teaching theatre arts, means that I can give you an entertaining, in-depth, and well-paced course full of insight and experience.

The mission of the studio is to provide a fun, inspiring, colorful studio space for groups and individuals in Asheville; to support the community of professional crafts studios in Asheville by providing maker space to the general public; to mentor amateur fabric artists by offering workshops, classes, and apprenticeships.
We aim to be one of Asheville’s top destinations for birthday parties, bachelorette parties, crafty baby showers, and other private event spaces, as well as a gathering space for parents of homeschool groups and afterschool group outings.
