Learn to Batik

With tools from around the globe

Immerse yourself in traditional wax-resist dyeing.

Our absolute favorite thing in the world. The smell of the beeswax, the crackle in the designs, the splashes and dribbles, the handmade tools… batik is phenomenally beautiful. We’ll teach you everything you need to know!

Batik Level 1

Our two-hour immerse batik experience is an around-the-world introduction to batik tools and techniques. Indonesian and Malaysian metal tjaps, tjanting tools, hand carved Indian wood blocks designed specifically for wax resist dyeing, and of course, paint brushes and cookie cutters! This class is our specialty of the house. Due to the hot wax, electric wax heaters, and adult-height tables, this class is not appropriate for children under 10 years old.

Project: a wall hanging, 28x28“ approx. on cotton hemmed cloth. See our gallery of students’ work! This is what you’ll make in class.

Batik Level 2+

For those who have taken our level one batik class and want to layer on a second (or third!) color to their original project. More complicated, multi-layer patterns is the theme of level two.

Contact us if you have questions about whether this class is appropriate for you and/or your group.
